Lazar Markovich Lissitzky was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist and architect. Lissitzky was born on 23 November 1890 in Pochinok, a small Jewish community 50 kilometres southeast of Smolensk, former Russian Empire. In 1919, at the invitation of Marc Chagall, he moved to Vitebsk, where he taught painting with him at the National Art School. He taught at the Moscow Vkhutemas. In 1921-1925 he lived in Germany and Switzerland, joined the Dutch group "Style".
